Hero Types

I think we're all familiar with the standard hero types such as the alpha and the beta so I won't bother to bore you with a lot of talk about their characteristics. Alphas are great and much loved by readers for many years. How many of you remember the mega-alpha men of Kathleen Woodiwiss' books? I remember sighing over them as a teen even though had I really known a man like that in real life, I'd probably have gotten into many an argument at his take charge attitude.

The rise of the beta hero, I believe came about as more women moved into the work force and became self sufficient financially. We did still have dreams of being taken care of but maybe in a less autocratic way.

The modern reader gets her choice of the kind of hero she would like. From cowboys to bad boys on motorcycles, to sensitive, tattooed musicians and even same sex heroes.  Aren't we lucky that we can read pretty much any kind of hero we like? I, for one, love this new world of anything goes and the authors that bring us these new and unique stories.

The woman as hero is always a great story, as well.  The urban fantasy world has opened this up like in no other time I can recall. I'm digging those stories.

There's also the latest trend, in books and television shows, of the antihero hero. I'm still on the fence about this development. I mean, Dexter was a serial killer, right? And we're supposed to root for him? This is a new mind set for the old dinosaur in me. What do you think? Who is your favorite antihero?

We're in a wonderful age for readers. Lots of new developments in the world of writing and writers and more choices than ever. There's something for everyone out there to enjoy. How exciting a time to live in. The age of the never-ending TBR stack!

What's your favorite hero type? What is your go-to book type that's a no-brainer because you know you'll love the hero?

What's Your Favorite Type of Heroine? by Larynn Ford #Heroines #Romance

What’s your favorite type of heroine? Heroines must be energetic since they’re constantly running from danger, chasing a bad guy, or in most cases chasing the guy. So, the prefect heroine must be in top physical shape which means she’s probably a twenty something and she must be a knockout if she gets the guy, right?  She possesses a sparkling personality, never out of place hair, and make up that stands the test of time. Perfect.

Hey, what about the rest of us? The not so perfect crowd with a few extra curves, unmanageable hair, and more years of . . . experience. They need love too!

I’ve been a longtime fan of Lynsay Sands Argeneau Series. She writes a funny, sexy, vampire series and has created some less than perfect heroines. Since becoming a vampire in Lynsay Sands world means the vampire blood exchange regenerates the human body to its peak physical condition, imperfections don’t matter in the long run but are troublesome to the human.

In Love Bites, one of the first books in the series, a human finds herself hopelessly falling for the
hero, a member of the Argeneau family. When the situation becomes a question of life or death and makes it necessary for her to be turned into a vampire in order to live, she is less that pleased that her transformation didn’t take away that pesky twenty pounds she had been struggling to lose. It was explained to her that the blood restored her body to its perfect condition and if the weight remained, it was meant to be.

Later in the series, The Accidental Vampire, a tour bus overturns leaving vacationers in a tangled heap. The heroine, trapped underneath another passenger, ingests a few droplets of his blood (you guessed it, he’s a vampire) and is of course turned. Elvi is a fifty something human who finds herself
dealing with her new body and dietary needs.

Even though these heroines become perfect twenty somethings, I love their journey from struggles with weight and age to their happily-ever-after.

The Argeneau series is a must read for paranormal fans.

LARYNN FORD began reading romance in her early teens and became interested in writing in high school. In 2010,  she joined the Romance Writers of America and enjoys her support group, the Southern Magic chapter in Birmingham, Alabama
