Marketing Tech Ideas for Book Sales

Other than networking on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+...

Other than pinning heroes and heroines having sexy time on Pinterest...

Other than holding a giveaway on Goodreads...

Other than creating an author newsletter with release news...

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO MARKET MY BOOK???

Marketing a book is as full time as writing and editing the story in the first place. I've promoted books for successful authors, and I'm always looking for new, fresh ways and places to put clients' works out there for the public.
So allow me to offer up a few thoughts "out of the box" to sell your book.

First of all, selling your book means selling YOU ! In the past, marketing was all about product-product-product, but now that Facebook has connected us all now and forever 'til death do us part (and not even then), readers want to interact with you, their rock star. So be accessible and share some of your life, interests, and special events besides your next book signing. You know the networks - use 'em!

Create an unforgettable, yummy hero, and readers want to interact with him too! Just think of all the ways you can communicate through your hero or heroine:
Hobbies... Needle arts... Sports and Teams... Collections... TV Shows...
Cars (specific models)... Video Games... Foods/Drinks...

Know your audience and consider the transmedia possibilities : Instagram and Tumblr for YA and NA readers, and Pinterest for older audiences - especially if your book has a collection to feature, a fixer-upper for DIY enthusiasts, or a baking theme (who doesn't love to eat?). Spotlight a china pattern in a character's dining room or a vintage toy in a haunted antiques store, and you open up a huge topic for conversation (and future inspiration!).

YA and NA readers are also found on Snapchat and Vine - two apps that are fresh and fast paced. If you can create a promotion with readers snapping your book cover or a video of something that involves your book, go for it!

On the low tech front...
Reader/author events are growing in popularity, like Authors After Dark, the Novel Experience, and more. They are big book signing parties to bring you face to face with readers, so get your costumes (re:corsets) ready for P A R T A Ys and bring books and SWAG! Speaking of which...

Pens, notepads... totebags... EVERYTHING printed with your book title and your name on the front! I read a great idea on a blog last month - insoles! Think about it, everybody's feet hurt at some point. The drawback is that your name won't be visible, but you'll have the undying loyalty of readers wearing them.

'Sokay... I challenge you to print your name on give away underwear like Ellen DeGeneres!

Until next time...

A bientot!

Great post Pamela! And that's the thing, we have to keep thinking of new ideas -- for books and for marketing and for us.

You post definitely made me start thinking!

Whenever I'm looking for a new promo item, I want it to be useful. I've thrown away a lot of 'junk' but never a (decent) flash drive, pen, mini flashlight, Emery board, bookmark, etc.

Along with pens and postcards, I have little cork coasters. They're for the cup holders in the car. People go crazy over them whenever I hand them out and explain where they belong.

Wonderful advice, Pamela.

Awesome post, Pamela. I made notes. :-) I'm just starting to use Pinterest but hadn't thought about letting my characters have pages. Glory is jumping up and down and demanding a page on glorious desserts, and Aidan is reluctantly considering his night-blooming exotic flowers :-). Of course you realize you just created MORE WORK for me!
