My Top Ten Gifts for Writers

Here are some suggestions for gifts to give to the writers in your life. (Or to ask someone else to give to you!)

Counting down, we'll start with...

10. The Storymatic (restorationhardware.com) -- This box of "six trillion stories" is loads of fun as a game, but it really shines as a writing prompt. Two sets of cards: one set has occupations and character traits, the other has situations and settings. Draw at random, and off you go! (Now if only the "matic" part of the title would generate another 60,000 words!)

9. Book Darts (bookdarts.com) -- I love these tiny little page markers. They are the perfect way to mark a passage or photo in a book when the idea of using a highlighter makes you cringe. Yes, you could "sticky note" the page, but Book Darts are much less intrusive. And last a lot longer.

8. 5% tee shirt (signals.com) -- Nuff said.

7. Books scarf and mitts (basbleu.com) -- When the power goes out this winter, and you have a deadline and 1 hour left on your laptop battery, these mitts will help keep your hands warm enough to keep pounding the keyboard. (The scarf is pretty awesome too.)

6. USB hub (kikkerland.com) -- Printer, external hard drive, scanner, iPod, phone: So many devices, so few USB ports! This little guy will solve your problem.

5. Masterpiece Microfiber Cloth (levenger.com) -- Let Mona do the dirty work. Be inspired as you clean your electronic screens with classic artworks printed on cloth.

4. Boston Public Library Delivery Tote Bag (levenger.com) -- One super cool tote.

3. Booklovers kitchen towels (basbleu.com) -- Just cute, right?

2. Nonfiction books (bn.com) -- anything from craft books such as Plot and Structure by James Scott Bell to resource books such as Victorian and Edwardian Fashions from "La Mode Illustree". No writer can have enough books.

Which, of course, leads me to the Number 1 gift on my list:

1. Books by Southern Magic authors! You can find a list of our members here, with links to their web sites and their books. Happy shopping and happy holidays!
