Reflections on the Readers Luncheon

Since I am a procrastinator par excellence, and since I ended up with the first blog after the annual Southern Magic Reader's Luncheon, what better thing to write about than my random ramblings of a wonderful event?

So, in no particular order....

*** This was my second luncheon as a Southern Magic member, and my first since my debut book came out in April. Last year, I felt like a clueless dolt and had the good fortune to be taken in hand by some uber-friendly women I've since come to consider friends. So this year, it was more like a family reunion--except with family members you actually like :-)

*** Who was the dude in the kilt with Sherrilyn Kenyon? Every time he walked past our table, the cell phone cameras came out and I might have had to physically restrain a couple of my tablemates. What is it about guys in plaid skirts that women can't resist? Someone needs to do a scientific study. It might need to be me.

*** Lexi George...We never finished our conversation. We must remedy that. Ditto MV Freeman.

*** I finally got to meet people I've "known" online for a while--Pamela Mason and Ciara Knight and Louisa Cornell, to name a few. How cool was that?

*** Roll Tide!

*** Those were seriously cool welcome bags this year.

*** Ummm....Missed the memo about not putting wine in gift baskets. Oops.

*** Thanks to Lisa and Kathy and Heather and Laura and everyone who worked so hard to make this a terrific day for authors and readers alike. These kinds of events don't just happen; it takes a lot of hard work, so thank you!

*** OMG. Jeaniene Frost. I had the good fortune to sit on an urban fantasy panel with her at Authors After Dark this year and I swear she talked about Bones' anatomical bits. You're gonna love her.

Suzanne!
Yes, yes! We must continue our conversation.

And I love the analogy--of it being like a big happy family reunion.

I do have some answers....

The guy with the kilt--was Cameron, he came with Sherrilyn, how or why I don't know, BUT I did get a picture with him. (c'mon, he had a *kilt* and *tattoos!)

As for Wine in baskets--this is my understanding and I did ask for clarification--you can put wine in the baskets, you just can't drink it at the event. So no problem there. Heck, I put in Vodka. Next year, I'm putting in a kettlebell. Just sayin'

And Jeanine Frost! WOOOT! So excited.

So glad to see you there--this was an AWESOME luncheon, because of you and everyone else. (and like you, I felt like I started many conversations but never was able to finish them!)

It was so great to meet you in person! And you're absolutely right...the luncheon was like a family reunion with only the fun bits!

and WAR EAGLE :P Sadly the guy in the kilt is officially taken! :)

LOL, Mary. All I know about Cameron was that several women at my table have "Cameron walking past" photos. Cameron walking past on his way to the buffet. Cameron walking past with his food tray. Cameron walking past for no discernible reason.

Okay @Bama....who is he? I assume he's not Mr. Sherrilyn, so...an assistant? Family friend? Stray guy with tats and a kilt?

Suzanne Johnson said...

@Rashda--it was great to finally meet you as well! My friend Stella started reading your book on the way back to Montgomery!

I'm sitting here trying to figure out how in the heck I missed a guy in a kilt! :( Oh well, maybe next year! lol

Suzanne Johnson said...

@Bama...yes, War Damn Eagle. Except (sob) it was New Mexico State and Georgia's here next week. And I'm working the game. It might be scary.

Suzanne Johnson said...

@Jamie...how DID you miss a guy in a kilt? Seriously!

M.V.Freeman said...

LOL!! @Bama, I think that is the safest thing! Appreciation from afar...

He was such a good sport! Can you send our thanks? Because really, he was gracious.

Guys, it was a grand event and a wonderful time was had by all.

Sherrilyn Kenyon is a true inspiration, hands down.
Okay, yes, the Kilted Cameron was very interesting. I think he was eyeing my corset as I was eyeing his kilt, since we both broke from the norm dress code.
Those baskets were awesome, even the skull ones.
Jeanine Frost, YES!
After this event and knowing I'm only 3 hrs from you guys, I may just have to join for 2013.
Whatcha think about that? :-)

Cameron is the boyfriend of a good friend of Sherri's who was sitting on Sherri's right at her table.

Carla Swafford said...

Cameron is Jacqui's husband (she was sitting between him and Sherrily) and Jacqui is a cousin to Sherrilyn if I remember correctly. He's a nice guy.

Carla Swafford said...

Ginny, we would love for you to join us. And LOVED your outfit!

Suzanne Johnson said...

@Bama...Good to know! I was thinking, judging by the reaction to him at my table, that I might need to hire a kilt-wearing guy to take to my book signing next week...you know...have him stroll back and forth in front of the bookstore and pose for pics with anyone who buys a book. Never mind that the book has no kilt-wearers in it. :-)

@Ginny--you need to join us!

just shared a pic of Cam's gf in the fb group

Ginny Lynn said...

@Bama, thank you for telling the ladies that they can only fantasize about dear Kilted Cameron.
@Carla, Thanks. I make corsets and several of mine were worn at M & M. It's part of my brand.
@Suzanne, I may just have to do that.

Bama said...

Ginny...hmmm bring some of your corsets next year if it is alright to sell them at the luncheon?

Heather said...

I am starting to think Cameron is going to need his own fan page!

Ginny and Jamie - we would love for both of you to join us! We are a fun group (and Jennifer Echols has been known to bring cupcakes to meetings).

Great post Suzanne. ROLL TIDE (my poor UK Wildcats didn't do so well (when does basketball start?))

Ginny Lynn said...

@Bama, If you want corsets, there are ways of finding me. ;-) M.V., Heather L, and Angela B chat with me.

Heather said...

Hmmm - I am also thinking we may need to all have corsets next year. Ginny - think you can hook us up?

Lexi said...

Suzanne, you are so kewl! I loved seeing you at the luncheon. Wish we could have talked more. The only reason there wasn't wine in my basket is that I didn't think of it, so don't feel bad. There is definitely something about a guy in a kilt.

Lexi said...

Oh, and forgot to say: Roll Tide!

Ginny Lynn said...

M.V. can tell you guys how to find me, especially since she had mine on before I drove back to GA. (hehe) I don't want to steal the spotlight from Suzanne here.

Carla Swafford said...

Oh, Beth, you're correct. Boyfriend. :-)

Pamela Mason said...

MERCY!
Of Corsets and Cameron, Kilts and Kenyon...
What a conversation ya'll are having here!

It was a pleasure to finally meet you too Suzanne. My regret is that I didn't have enough time to visit with you.

As for joining in with the Southern Romance Magicians for more mischief and mayhem, I did the drive in a little over 2hours (following Ginny) and now that I know where the interstate is, you won't be able to keep me away.
Especially if ya'll have some more pirates-in-kilts... LOL!

It was SUCH A GREAT EVENT ya'll! Totally rocked, and I'm looking forward to Jeanine Frost next year.

Let it be noted here: I am reserving a place at Suzanne's table next year!!

Suzanne Johnson said...

Definitely want you at my table next year, Pamela!

Bama said...

gah I am torn between a seat at Carla's table and a seat at Suzanne's table for next year now. :( lol

Suzanne Johnson said...

LOL--that means you're in a good spot for me and Carla to offer you BRIBES to sit at our tables. May the best briber win :-)

Bama said...

oooh! I love bribes ;) lol

Carla Swafford said...

Hey, Beth/Bama, I've already warned Naima Simone and Debra Glass that I'm plot...uh...planning to out do them in the table goodies. So we'll see. LOL!

Just keep in mind that I own stock in Hobby Lobby (at least I pretend I do).

Bama said...

hehe Carla :)

M.V.Freeman said...

You know what--I think we a challenge here....

I'm liking it!

Louisa Cornell said...

So glad I got to meet you, Suzanne! And I'm looking forward to reading your books once I get my GH entry in the mail at the end of December.

Let me see ....

We have a hot dude in a kilt. I spoke with him and he is a real doll! Must have a dude in a kilt next year. It definitely dresses up an event.

ROLL TIDE ROLL !!! That was a real heart stopper!

And apparently we will be having the Martha Stewart Face Off of Table Favors next year.

Glue guns at the ready?

FIRE !!!
