Christmas Romances

I've been wondering about something lately and thought maybe someone out there could clue me in. I find it interesting how strongly people feel about Christmas romance books. It seems they love or hate them. What's that about? Anyone?

I can’t say I feel strongly about Christmas romance books. I don’t think I’ve ever read one. So I'm making a point of it to read one or two this season. I'm looking for something to knock my socks off. Something so sweet I'll need a box of tissues to get through it.

If you're into Christmas romance books or know someone who is, I'd love it if you'd leave a comment with a recommendation.

I've been reading them in the last week or so in a desperate attempt to get into the holiday spirit. I think I like the short story collections better than full blown novels, although Mary Balogh has one that's pretty good and Eloisa James has a Christmas book for one of her Duchess series, and pretty much anything she writes is good. I read a few older Nora Roberts'--First Impressions and Gabriel's Angel (not really specifically xmas)--both were sweet if that's what you're looking for. Then there's a short story collection by Lori Foster if you like contemporary stuff- Yule be Mine, and a collection called The Naughty List. Oh! and then there's the collection that has Lisa Kleypas' RITA winning story I will. Soooo good. (But skip her Christmas Eve in Friday Harbor--it's barely 200 pages in a hardcover, and there are really big holes in the story that just makes it feel like she phoned it in, which is sad, because I love her stuff).

Oh Callie, I LOVE Christmas romances. I have a collection of Christmas anthologies and Christmas romances I drag out every year to help me get into the Christmas spirit.

Mary Balogh's A Christmas Promise

Cathy Maxwell's His Christmas Promise

Eloisa James' An Affair Before Christmas

Kerrelyn Sparks' All I Want for Christmas is a Vampire

Johanna Maitland's The Earl's Mistletoe Bride

Annie Burrows' A Countess by Christmas

Then the ANTHOLOGIES :

Regency Christmas Proposals

One Candlelit Christmas

Mistletoe Kisses

Regency Christmas Wishes

A Christmas Ball

A Stockingful of Joy

It Happened One Night

A Bride by Christmas

and the one I love most -

Angel Christmas (with stories by Mary Balogh, Marilyn Campbell, Carole Nelson Douglas, Emma Merritt and Patricia Rice)

It was published in 1995, but you can probably get it from Amazon.

Can you tell I REALLY like Christmas romances?

I have to confess, I like books based on seasons and holidays.

But honestly, the book I'd suggest is "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens.

(I can't compare to the lists Lisa and Louisa gave you. ;-))

For something a little different, try VISIONS OF SUGAR PLUMS by Janet Evanovich. It's a between the numbers Stephanie Plum book. Though not strictly a romance, it IS a holiday book and her antics always make me laugh.
