Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins?

If you don't know who Barnabas is, you're much too young. I used to run home from school to watch Dark Shadows every afternoon. I was in love with Barnabas. A classic tv show from 1961-1977 starring Jonathan Frid as the 175 year old tortured vampire, who lost his true love, Josette. The show also had ghosts, werewolves, and witches. I still have my set of paperback books and somewhere I have the album and other books. Quentin was also attractive, though now I roll my eyes at those sideburns.

In 1991 they did a remake starring Ben Cross as the immortal vampire. It lacked "zing".

They reported last night that Johnny Depp is a producer of the big screen remake and will even star as Barnabas. Made me stop and think. Johnny Depp as Barnabas? Hmmmmm. Not an automatic pick, but could work.

Anyone else out there old enough to remember Dark Shadows? What do you think of Johnny Depp as Barnabas?

This is great news, Debbie! I only hope Johnny plays him seriously and not as a wacko that he likes to play. At least, this Barnabas will be worth staring at.

I use to rush home after school to watch Dark Shadows. I wore a cross and made sure the cross was visible when I went to bed at night. Did want to take a chance a vampire would miss it and bite me. :-D I also had an awesome black stone right (and still do) that I thought looked similar to Barnabas's. I so was wrapped up the myth.

Glad to know you were as crazy about it as I was. It's on DVD now. There's almost a million of them. (g)

I loved that show when I could see it. I am with you Carla, I hope he plays it as someone compelling and doesn't ruin by being too twisted.

Johnny Depp as Barnabas? Oh my... All I can say is, "Bite me, bite me!" JD as Barnabas would be one 'sigh worthy' vampire.

I too used to watch Dark Shawdows and had a huge crush on Barnabas. Now I look at him and wonder if something was wrong with my eyesight. That is one scary looking unattractive vamp!

>wonder if something was wrong >with my eyesight.

Isn't that the truth! My crushes were Barnabas, David Cassidy, & Bobby Sherman.

LOL, I remember Dark Shadows! It was on after school, and wasn't it in black and white? My parents even talk about watching DS, and my dad started getting all the DVDs when they came out. Barnabas was so scary to me then.

Johnny Depp? Hmm, well, I guess he could do it, but only if he didn't do goofy as Carla said. Keith Richards-Barnabas doesn't work quite like KR-Jack Sparrow....

Yes, it was B&W. At one time, they ran it on the SciFi station. It didn't have the same appeal. Even looked kind of cheesey.

I really hate re-reading my posts. I always catch so many errors. :::sigh:::

It should read "Didn't want to take a chance..." and "... black stone ring..."

LOL. And mine should be Shadows, not Shawdows!

Carla, I think we were both overcome with the thought of JD as Barnabas.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Sneaking in for a moment to tell my age! I am Gaill Wills's friend, Pam, who has attended several luncheons, workshops, meetings, etc. I just sent my membership app in to you ladies so that should make me official soon. Yes, I remember Dark Shadows. I LOVED Barnabas Collins! I actually have an old 45 of Quentin's Theme and another of the musical themes. I really should pull that out. Yes, it was in black and white. Any of you young chicks want to make something of that? LOL We weren't allowed to watch it until we were visiting my Nana in PA one summer. She let us watch it, we didn't have nightmares, so my mother finally relented. I love Johnny Depp!He has played some whackos, but he has also done some thoughtful roles so lets hope for that!

I have always loved Dark Shadows and this is great news. I can definitely see Johnny Depp as Barnabas. I can't wait for the movie to come out.

By the way in your notes at the top of this page you mention it ran until 1977. It went off the air in early May of 1967.

Dark Shadows was out when I was very young. I remember being scared of the show. My dad usually came home from work a little early and he would watch it. Sometimes, he'd turn the channel from our cartoons just to watch Barnabas! Sure made me mad!

I think Depp would be a good Barnabas. I was a fan of the show as a child, and am watching the DVDs now. I don't think the question is whether Depp is good. The big question is the script. Part of what made DS so good is it was slways running at least two story lines at the same time. Remember Jason McGuire blackmailing Elizabeth? Every incarnation of DS has failed because it zeros on the Barnabas story to the exclusion of the other stories. If they redo DS - they need to think at least three serials, and get Quentin, Burke Devlin, Sam Evans, Jason, Peter Bardford, Roger, Trask and all the other story lines blended in with Barnabas and Angelique.

I'm only 19 and I started watching Dark Shadows when it aired on the scfi channel a couple of years ago. I love Johnny Depp but I don't know if he has the depth to play Barnabas. I suppose it would be interesting to see another actor play such a complex role and see what he does with it but to me Frid will always be the one and only Barnabas Collins.
